Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has released a major recruitment notification for the post of Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Grade-II in the Prosecution Department of Tamil Nadu. This recruitment is suitable for practicing advocates who have criminal court experience and a Bachelor of Law (B.L.) degree.

The recruitment process includes Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview, and selections will strictly follow merit and reservation rules as per the Tamil Nadu Government Servants (Conditions of Service) Act.

  • Application Correction Window:
    From 04.01.2026 (12:01 AM) to 06.01.2026 (11:59 PM)
  • Preliminary Examination: 15.02.2026 (9:30 AM – 12:30 PM)
  • Main Examination: Date will be announced after declaration of Prelims results.

Vacancies

A total of 61 vacancies are notified across different communal categories.

The distribution includes GT, BC(OBCM), BC(M), MBC/DC, SC, SC(A), and women sub-categories.
Also note:

  • Vacancies are tentative and may be modified until Main exam results are announced.
  • Shortlisted candidate ratios for subsequent stages may be revised accordingly.

Pay Scale

Level-22 — Pay Matrix (as per Tamil Nadu pay structure).


Eligibility Conditions

1. Age Limit (as on 01.07.2025)

For Others (not belonging to SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM), BCM):

  • Minimum Age: 26 years
  • Maximum Age: 36 years
  • Age concession:
    • Persons with Benchmark Disability: Up to 46 years
    • Ex-Servicemen: Up to 50 years
    • Destitute Widow: No maximum age limit

For Reserved Categories (SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM), BCM):

  • No Maximum Age Limit, i.e., should not have crossed 60 years at time of selection/appointment.

2. Educational Qualification & Experience

You  must:

  1. Possess a B.L. (Bachelor of Law) Degree from a university recognized by UGC.
  2. Be a member of the Bar.
  3. Have active practice in Criminal Courts for not less than 5 years.

Active practice includes work as a temporary APP Grade-II.

Adequate Knowledge of Tamil

You must demonstrate knowledge of Tamil by fulfilling one of the following:

  • SSLC/HSC with Tamil as a subject
  • Studied Tamil Medium in school
  • Passed Second Class Tamil Language Test by TNPSC

Documents for Qualification

You must upload:

  • SSLC / HSC / Degree / BL Degree Certificates or Consolidated Marksheet
  • Bar Council Enrolment Certificate
  • Practice Certificate (Annexure V format) issued by:
    • Public Prosecutor, High Court of Madras
    • Additional Public Prosecutor, High Court
    • District / Additional Public Prosecutor
    • Special Public Prosecutor
    • Senior Advocate designated by the High Court

Important:
Failure to upload proper supporting documents will lead to rejection after due process.

Selection Process

The recruitment consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination — Screening only
  2. Main Examination
  3. Interview

Marks of Preliminary exam are not counted in the final merit list.

You are scoring less than minimum marks cannot attend Main Examination.

The Main exam has 5 papers, out of which Paper I (Tamil Eligibility Test) is qualifying in nature.

Answering in more than one language in any paper will be invalid.

How to Apply Online

Step-1: One Time Registration (OTR)

  • You must be completed on www.tnpscexams.in
  • You can registration Fee: ₹150 (valid for 5 years)
  • You can adhaar linking mandatory
  • You can upload scanned photograph (20–50 KB) and signature (10–20 KB)
  • You must maintain valid personal email and mobile number.

OTR is NOT an application for the post.
After OTR, you must apply separately to this exam.


Step-2: Online Application

  • You can login with OTR credentials → Click “APPLY” next to this post
  • You can upload current photo (taken after notification date with name & date printed)
  • You can review application preview
  • You can submit only after verifying details

Incorrect OTR details copied to the exam form will cause rejection.


Examination Fee

  • Preliminary Exam Fee: ₹100
  • Main Exam Fee: ₹200 (for selected candidates only)

Fee Exemption (as per eligibility):

  • Persons with Benchmark Disability: Full fee exemption
  • Destitute Widow: Full exemption
  • Ex-Servicemen: Two free attempts

Fee must be paid online only. Offline payment instruments like DD/IPO will result in rejection.


Certificate Verification

Before Main examination, onscreen certificate verification will be conducted.
Practice certificates will be verified by a Prosecution Committee, and may be rejected.
Decision of committee is final.


Reservation Rules

Applicable as per Tamil Nadu reservation guidelines.
Reservation not applicable for:

  • Ex-Servicemen
  • Destitute Widow

Hall Ticket & Communication

  • Hall tickets will be available online only (no postal dispatch).
  • Exam information, verification schedule, and interview dates → published on TNPSC site.
  • Alerts via email/SMS, but website checking is candidate’s responsibility.

Banned Items

Mobile phones, smart watches, storage devices, books, notes, calculators, and programmable equipment are prohibited.
Violation = disqualification or debarment.


Legal & Litigation Clause

All appointment decisions are provisional until the disposal of pending High Court cases.
