India Post GDS Selection Process 2026

One of the major attractions of GDS recruitment is that the notification provides for selection through a system-generated merit list rather than a conventional written examination.

The merit list is prepared using the marks obtained in the Class 10 Secondary School Examination, with marks/grades converted according to the procedure prescribed by the Department. The percentage is calculated to an accuracy of four decimal places.

For candidates whose marksheets contain grades/points, the notification provides a 9.5 multiplication factor for grade-to-mark conversion in applicable cases. Where CGPA is available, it may also be converted by multiplying the CGPA by 9.5 as prescribed.

Selection Stages

Step 1: Online registration
↓
Step 2: Online application and post preference

Step 3: System-generated merit list

Step 5: Provisional engagement offer

Step 6: Pre-engagement formalities/training

Step 7: Provisional/final engagement after required verification

Shortlisted candidates are informed through SMS/email, but the Department advises candidates to regularly visit the GDS portal because non-receipt of SMS/email due to technical reasons is not the Department’s responsibility.
